At age 11, Reec went to live with his father. Reec wanted play basketball, and hopefully play college basketball. So his father, built a half-court basketball hoop in the backyard.
He was the only kid with a court in the neighborhood, and all the kids would come to their house to hoop. As Reec continued to practice, his game got better.
One day they both decided to play one-on-one to seven. Pops was more of a martial artist than a basketball player, but he was a good defender.
Reec won.
“He always prepared me to be winner,” says Reec.
The backyard was quiet. All the kids in the backyard intently watched to see the father and son react. They assumed that Pops would be mad, but it was the opposite.
“Nah, I’m not mad. I’m happy. One of the happiest days in my life. We looked at each other, and we both had tears in our eyes, because he went to the next level. Not so much beating me. He earned his stripes,” says Pops.
